Program
Description
Wayne
State University, with support of the William and Flora Hewlett
Foundation, created the program on Mediating Theory and Democratic Systems
(MTDS) in 1991. As the sixteenth Hewlett Center established for the study
of dispute resolution theory, the Wayne State program addresses the
increasingly complex and crucial problems of social conflict among
ethnically diverse peoples. Wayne State is a Carnegie I research
institution in the heart of Detroit. MTDS is situated in the
university’s College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs and
combines theoretical inquiry on both urban and international conflict, as
befits one of America’s most diverse and internationally connected
cities.
